I stumbled across that possibility and used a powered USB 3.0 hub. Unfortunately, I/O was HORRIBLE (50 MB/s vs 150-200MB/s) and the same failure STILL happened!It's also possible you have low voltage problems.
Thanks for the UAS tip. I'll read into it and try it. Right now, even running only one drive, it still fails with the drive in question. Rather suprisingly, it fails during the read pass, not the write pass. I'm beginning to suspect drive defect or failure because the drive registered several hours in over-temp range (57C vs 55C).
