Can't tell from your diagram what your circuit looks like.
However, I believe, if your fan is 5V you will not be able to control it with a 3.3V GPIO pin without using a transistor or MOSFET that the GPIO pins triggers for the 5V to drive the fan. I say this from the position of working on a project to control a 5V relay.
