you can use the --no-install-recommendsI did a bit of reading on dnsmasq - which is the "standard answer" to this sort of thing in this forum.
It looks like it does what I'm thinking about - but it might be a bit too much for what I need. I am skeptical about installing it - because you never know what all gets started when you do a package manage install these days.
That's why I like the busybox approach - you know exactly what you're getting. One simple program that you run and you know what it is doing. So, that's what I am (still) hoping for.
if i recall dnsmasq was a single *.c file back in the day, not sure about now.
