I've done some more digging, and as far as I can tell noVNC and wayvnc don't yet work together to implement username/password authentication. Not clear, but it seems that wayvnc is the problem. (There was an argument that said the authentication should be done at the web socket level, which would be a more significant change).Having said that, I've not yet got authentication with a user name and password working.
I'm going to put authentication to one side for now.
