Everything you can do on the Pi3 you can do on the Pi5, just with different software and a lot more speed. OMXPlayer is proprietary, if you make the move to V4L2, gstreamer, DRM/KMS etc then you future-proof yourself, and also make yourself multiplatform, as they are all standard Linux APIsI suppose, then, that the best solution is to trade in the useless Pi5 for a 3B+.
Note that omxplayer sort of works on the Pi4, but not perfectly.
