The problem with taking that path is you are likely to find that any alternative to a Pi is no easier to use.

Pushing for having a 'Wiring-Pi 2.0' which works on Pi Bookworm, Pi 5 and others, would seem the best path to me. Perhaps ask for that in its own thread, see what interest and help there may be ?
AIUI, the wiringPi author has indicated they will not support the RPi5.

You will probably find that supporting the RPi5 requires more work than migrating to the standard Linux interfaces. I think there is some interest in providing a wrapper over those, though I personally don't see the advantage in that over using them directly. I would rather see those interfaces get more documentation and examples.
