I checked out the library at the link you provided, and ended up using it , so thanks for that.
I found the problem in the end. Several of the connecting wires I used in my breadboard turned out to be broken. I have had a similar problem in the past and spent days trying to sort it out. So I went through all my connecting wires and tested them all. Quite a lot of them ended up in the bin! When I wired it all up again with working connectors this time, it worked a treat.
