A while back I had the idea of bringing my old gas meter into the 21st century by automating it, the results for my own consumption.
I used a PiZero + camera to grab an image of the reading then "Tersseract OCR" https://guides.nyu.edu/tesseract/home to convert an image of the reading to text. The aim was to do this every hour or so and produce usage stats.
The OCR worked great on all the other writing on the meter but not the actual meter reading so the project got paused.
On reflection adjusting the camera focus might of helped but at the time I didn't have the little tool. I also needed a better camera mount and LED illumination triggered just prior to taking an image. Maybe I will return to this some time.
