No help to you but a camera module V3 wide is working OK for me on a Pi5 running latest Bookworm
You dont need to add `dtoverlay=imx708` to /boot/config.txt (which is now /boot/firmware/config.txt)
No need to "Ensured the camera interface is enabled in raspi-config" - that is not needed (and is not in my raspi-config)
libcamera apps are now called rpicam apps e.g. rpicam-jpeg (though old names still work)
Did you create a python virtual environment with system packges to run the picamera2 tests?
