You should be able to. Power it up and see what happens. If you can type 'python' at the command line and get a REPL you should be good to go - Ctrl-D to exit.I want to know first of all if I can use what I have without needing to spend any money?
The book you have should be applicable to what you have. But some things may no longer work as the Python 2 it included reached End of Life and it can sometimes be difficult to find packages for that these days.
As you say, things have moved on, so it's worth considering installing Bookworm 32-bit to get the very latest Python 3.11.2 available for a Pi and live in the modern world. You might need to obtain a larger SD Card though which I'd recommend anyway as the original gives you an instant fall-back with a simple swap if you want to keep developing while trying to figure out Bookworm, the joys of Managed Packages and Virtual Environments, what's new about Bookworm compared to whatever applies to what the Pi originally had.
I understand why Bullseye is suggested over Bookworm but I would recommend Bookworm because that's what you will probably be using if you do buy better kit so may as well learn what will be applicable from the off for when you do.
I would have suggested installing the Bookworm 32-bit with Desktop version because it can be changed to Boot to Command Line if it is too painfully slow but I am not sure if that will even boot to a GUI on an original Pi.
But really, If you believe you do now want to pursue using a Pi I would suggest buying something better, a Pi Zero 2W or at least a 3B, new or at a cheap second hand price, all of which will support Bookworm Desktop.
