So, taking your advice, I started all over again fresh.
I used the Raspberry Pi imager to load the recommended Raspian OS onto my SanDisk 64GB SD card.
I edited the setup when the imager asked me to, setting the name of the RPi, the timezone, the country and the credentials to get on my home network.
I plugged the SD card into m RPi and powered up. It all went as I described in my first post. After I saw the gray screen with the cursor in the center, I saw a flash of the desktop image and then my TV started flashing that it had no signal. This time, again taking your advice, I simply waited. It's now been more than 15 minutes. The activity light is no longer flashing that I can see. The TV is still flashing the no signal message. I have not touched anything and I will let it go longer, but I fear that I remain in the same situation that I originally reported.
Thanks for listening.
