I do not understand the reluctance to use the tools in raspi-config to change localisation settings from GB to a new value such as US. It is quick and easy:
- Enter the command "sudo raspi-config"
- Localisation Options
- Locale
- Scroll to "en_GB.UTF-8 UTF-8" and hit the space bar to deselect
- Scroll to "en_US.UTF-8 UTF-8" and hit the space bar to select and make English US the default
- Click OK
- Select "en_US.UTF-8" as the default local
- Click OK
- Click Finish
- Reboot
- Enter the command "sudo raspi-config"
- Localisation Options
- Timezone to configure Timezone from default
- Keyboard to set keyboard layout to match your keyboard
- WLAN Country to set legal wireless channels for your country.
- Click Finish
- Reboot
