I tracked down a 6mm lens to fiddle with. It turns out that the back 1/3 of the lens body is just a threaded ring.
So the answer to the original question is, I think, that loosening the lock-screw and unscrewing the front two sections of the lens is equivalent to adjusting the back focus ring, and lets you to move the lens forward another 4mm or so (or more, but it's probably best to stop when you see the clip and the thread).
You may need a bit of both adjustments.
