I'd like to see the output of blkid when the system does boot.
This is from the system that did boot ok after:

(1) showing the drop to initramfs message in the original post
(2) I powered down the USB power adaptor, wait one minute
(3) it rebooted fine and has been running for nearly four days from top. I am writing this at the said system with the Toshiba thumb drive plugged in

On close examination, now I see that the Toshiba thumb drive seem might had been configured as a Ubuntu boot disk or the 'live disk' that allow trying on Intel PC without installing Linux??

Error message from initramfs specifically said missing 2d88 which is the NVMe.

$ sudo blkid
/dev/nvme0n1p1: LABEL_FATBOOT="bootfs" LABEL="bootfs" UUID="5A88-...." BLOCK_SIZE="512" TYPE="vfat" PARTUUID="2d88....-01"
/dev/nvme0n1p2: LABEL="rootfs" UUID="5170097f-f1f6-42d8-a2ff-......." BLOCK_SIZE="4096" TYPE="ext4" PARTUUID="2d88....-02"
/dev/sda1: LABEL_FATBOOT="TOSHIBA" LABEL="UUI" UUID="B2F5-...." BLOCK_SIZE="512" TYPE="vfat" PARTUUID="c307....-01"
