Is it not SIM800L which most people use to connect via the cellular network to get an internet link in places where 2G is still supported ?
In the UK the EOL for 2G is said to be 2033 but many suggest there's so much still reliant on it that its life will be extended again.
Never used one but the modules seem cheap enough, about $5-$10, and there should be plenty of example code for using it, sending AT commands etc.
Someone may have even interfaced it to a Pico already, perhaps even using MicroPython.
