See the datasheet https://www.pololu.com/file/0J309/MQ2.pdf, 'basic test loop'
For VC=5V, the voltage on RL is somewhere between 5V > VRL >= 0V.
Adapting VRL to 3.3V range for pico an be done by implementing RL as a voltage divider, e.g. 3k ->VRL---1k---2k---GND in series. On the 2k resistor, the voltage is then in a 3.3V range.

Can't judge about your feelings, but consulting the datasheet and following the rules given there is usually a good idea.I'm not sure that I'm happy doing it this way
