Most SD cards are very well rated for high temperatures (continuous 95C in some cases) although I fully appreciate your concerns and it also doesn't make me feel much more comfortable.
Damaged/Cracked SD cards do have a tendency to get hot (as in frying your skin hot) whilst sometimes continuing to work but I don't think this is a factor here.
If the SD temperature is a concern then use a USB SD card interface or go for external SSD. I have some Samsung Fit Plus mini USB SSD sticks and even they are put on small extension leads to both reduce the temperature of the stick and the Pi.
