General discussion • Re: RPi 5 as a desktop daily driver?

I wanted to post my opinion on the topic "No RPi5 for me" but it is now locked. So, I'll post here instead.

Short summary of this post: Yes. RPi5 is my desktop daily driver with Raspberry Pi Desktop OS.

Long post: (can be ignored............... as I like to ramble...)

Back in ancient history, I loved Window XP so much that, today, I still use my old Dell with XP so as to still use some of my old classic programs, however it is never connected to the internet.

When the RPi4 came out, I bought one and used it, powered on 24/7 for years, with dual monitors, and learned Linux, discovered science projects with my grandson and got him the same setup. Connecting to GPIO as well as usb'ing to Arduinos was fun.

Meanwhile, my wife, always buying up-to-date laptops with the current flavor of Windows was always fighting Mr.Gates' many idiosyncrasies that popped up to stymie her from month to month.

On my RPi4, Libre Office Suite covered my office needs and Chromium gave me all the internet I needed.

Before RPi5 came out I was prevented (at least I thought I was) from using some 64 bit programs that I wanted, plus the current RPi software OS made YouTube mightly glitchy on RPi4.

So, I bought the RPi5 in January 2024 and have loved it ever since.

With RPi5, YouTube is now great and YouTube sound finally is working properly. I have the case fan running, keeping me at 39 deg most of the time, going up and slightly throttling only occasionally, not an issue for me.

My RPi5 benefits include running my watercolor graphic favorite MyPaint (a processor hog) as well as installing Arduino 2.x that didn't fit on my RPi4.

Last night I found the YouTube video of "When Did Raspberry Pi become the Villain?" by Jeff Geerling. He tests the RPi5 vs the N100 and at the near end, he confirms that the RPi5 wins! But, he is diplomatic enough to say at the very end these words, "maybe buy both......" ha.

I won't do that. My wife's Windows laptop is downstairs but I don't need it.

For me and my grandson, the RPi5 is just super. Being able to use the Linux command line is empowering. And, best of all, I do not have to sign all those waivers that hit you in the face when you first power up the N100 style desktop computers. Jeff really pointed out that ugly part of Windows-systems !

Three hip-hips to the RPi5..........
