Your zipped iso worked for me to resolve the broken install. I installed on a pi5 with a samsung EVO+ 128gb included in the Canakit I purchased.Another brief update on this; I finally managed to build an image with a backported fix. I've updated LP: #2064208 with links to the test image and testing instructions for anyone interested who can give it a whirl (see comment 1 under that bug).
Just to set expectations: even if this turns out to be a reliable fix (and I'm not sure about that yet, though it's worked so far in my testing), there'll be a fair delay in getting it into the desktop image. I used a PPA limited to amd64 and arm64 to build the image quickly, but one of the packages involved is webkit2gtk. That takes over 8 hours to build on arm64 ... but over 2 days (!) on RISC-V, which would have to land before the package could migrate and we could re-build images from it (even though we don't care about that architecture for the Pi images).
So, I'm afraid there's a bit of a long haul on this yet, but I'm getting hopeful the light at the end of the tunnel isn't another on-coming train!
