AP-STA sounds good and there are effects. Using a WiFI device for both in and out halves the speed. You see the same effect when using a repeater with just one WiFi chip. The dual use of the WiFi chip could not pass on my max 4G broadband speed.
For a Pi Zero, an add-on USB WiFi is limited by the Zero speed. I switched from a Zero W to a Zero 2 but have not tested the Zero 2 with the same setup.
The Pi WiFi range is also limited. I set up a Pi with a bridge from the WiFi to Ethernet and experimented with a second WiFi device to access my 4G hotspot. As an AP, the Pi had the range for a room but not the full length of my house.
I switched the AP to the add-on WiFi. The Pi router near my desk used the Pi WiFi as the connection to the nearby hotspot. The plugged in MIMO WiFi adaptor is the access point and has the range to cover my whole house.
Experiment with your current hardware. If the range is not enough, invest in a good add on USB 3 WiFi device with full antenna and a chip supporting AP mode.
